So Long, O’Sheas
1 May 2012 | By: Seth Shafer The colorful O’Sheas casino closed its doors for the final time on May 1, with the parking garage imploded as work gets into full swing on the $500 million Linq project that will transform what was O’Sheas and the Imperial Palace into a new gambling, retail, dining, and entertainment complex. Caesars is embarking on one of the first new construction projects started on the Las Vegas Strip in several years, with a 550-foot tall Ferris wheel serving as the capper for the new casino resort that Caesars hopes will make better use of the prime location and foot traffic in the area. O’Sheas had carved out a niche for itself on the Strip by offering table games like blackjack and craps with low minimum wagers as well as serving as the unofficial beer pong hotspot in Vegas with numerous tournaments and promotions; beer pong fans need not fear as the games have moved to Bthe Slush Bar at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall. The Imperial Palace is also slated to be replaced, with the name of the new casino still not settled on — although it won’t be a themed casino, with a more generic approach planned to fit with the overall Linq project. Caesars officials have promised that a piece of O’Sheas will live on, as an area near the entrance to the Linq will feature table games as well as an O’Sheas pub. Implosions on the Strip were relatively common during the construction boom of the early to mid 2000s but the implosion of O’Sheas was the first since 2007 when the New Frontier met its demise. Caesars has been under pressure from investors to make better use of its multiple properties on the Strip and elsewhere in Vegas, with the Linq project the largest and most extensive effort to date to make more profitable use of its valuable Vegas real estate.

PokerStars to Buy Full Tilt?
26 April 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Just over one year after the US government indicted online poker sites Full Tilt and PokerStars the two companies are once again making waves with the surprise announcement that PokerStars may be in negotiations to buy its one-time bitter rival. News of the possible deal swept the online poker world by storm, coming as a shock as Groupe Bernard Tapie had previously announced it was in the late stages of closing its own deal to buy Full Tilt for $80 million, with some speculating that the closing of the deal and the re-launching of the Full Tilt online poker site might just be days away. The latest rumors appeared to be on target, as late on April 24 Groupe Bernard Tapie put out an official press release stating that it was bowing out of talks to buy Full Tilt and that it was unable to come to an agreement with the US Department of Justice and Full Tilt on various issues including the timeline to repay money owed to players as well as settling outstanding legal issues in the US. The press release also directly addressed the rumors of PokerStars as the new potential Full Tilt suitor: “We understand from press reports that the DOJ may have entered into an agreement with PokerStars pursuant to which PokerStars will acquire the FTP assets. If accurate, we can only assume that PokerStars determined that it was willing to accept these legal and financial risks in order to resolve its own legal situation with DOJ.” Both PokerStars and Full Tilt have yet to put out an official press release denying or confirming the rumors, which peg the potential deal price at a whopping $750 million — far above what Groupe Bernard Tapie was offering but that figure would also include settlement money to potentially address legal concerns in the US. While many poker players rejoiced at the renewed possibility of being paid out the money they had in accounts at Full Tilt — which went dark in June 2011 with all player funds frozen and in limbo — some remained sceptical about the deal, as Full Tilt and PokerStars had previously been bitter rivals and their products largely overlap, with PokerStars seemingly gaining little by pursuing Full Tilt at this stage.

Gambling on Casino Stocks
23 April 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Investors who have taken a gamble on casino stocks in 2012 have already seen a nice return with more potential gains forecast by many analysts as the world economy slowly mends and more tourists turn up in Vegas, Macau, and other gambling destinations. The Standard and Poor’s casino index of well-known gambling related stocks is up 12% already in 2012, buoyed by gains in Las Vegas Sands (LVS) and Wynn Resorts (WYNN) — two companies poised to benefit from an uptick in demand at casinos in both the US as well as abroad in strong growth areas like Macau and Singapore. Casino stocks are also increasingly diversified and no longer solely rely on gambling revenues, with hotel and resort operations as well as entertainment and shopping sales helping to insulate the performance of their operating results and stock price unlike in the past when gambling results were the primary difference between a profit or a loss. Growth in Asia has been a key driver in luring investors into stocks, with Macau’s stellar growth showing no signs of abating anytime soon and increased interest in new areas such as Vietnam, the Phillipines, South Korea, and Japan, where numerous casino projects are being planned or constructed. Other gambling and casino stocks such as Penn Gaming (PENN), Boyd Gaming (BOYD), Isle of Capri Casinos (ISLE), and Ameristar Casinos (ASCA) are focused more squarely on the US gambling market, offering slightly more limited upside potential but also a clearer picture into their potential performance in the near future. Casinos in the US are still struggling to recover from the recent recession but many have once again found solid footing and are beginning to turn in consecutive months of profitability, with Las Vegas casinos in particular finally seeing a boost from the return of convention traffic and increased visits from gamblers from around the world.

Momentum Grows for Online Gambling in the US
2 April 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Several US states are taking a hard look at legalizing online poker and casino sites for residents, with the primary lure being the possibility of propping up sagging state budgets with millions of dollars in new tax revenues. In 2011 the District of Columbia became the first area to pass legislation that could allow it to offer online casino and poker sites to residents; delays and questions have plagued the initiative, however, with the possibility that the entire endeavor may be scrapped before ever seeing the light of day. That hasn’t stopped legislators in Ney Jersey, California, and Nevada from pursuing very similar legislation, with a recent ruling by the US Department of Justice clarifying the scope of the Wire Act to apply only to sportsbetting — and not to other activites such as online poker or online lotto ticket sales — adding more fuel to the fire. With many US states still struggling with high unemployment and dipping property values, a pitch for online gambling is much more receptive to voters’ ears than in the past. The same greater receptivity to gambling in general has seen states such as Massachusetts vote to add brick-and-mortar casinos for the very first time, while several other states have dramatically expanded their gambling options. As far as the potential money at stake from legalizing online gambling in the US, estimates vary widely depending on which side of the debate you fall on. Industry groups and pro-gambling lobbyists peg the potential tax revenues as high as $10 billion per year for the US gambling market, but studies that individual states have done have produced much smaller figures, with the state of Iowa releasing a study that shows it could collect around $5-$15 million a year while California projects it could make as much as $250 million.

Top 5 Unusual Casino Games to Try
28 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Most gambling fans have tried their hand at popular games like blackjack, craps, and roulette but there are also plenty of other unique and interesting casino games that you might give a whirl for a change of pace at both online casinos as well as at brick-and-mortar casinos. Below we’ll look at a few games that you may not have yet given a spin, including some that actually have quite good odds for players and are definitely worth checking out. Pai Gow: Pai Gow is based on poker and uses the same basic hand rankings, with players dealt seven cards and competing against the dealer, who also gets seven cards. the goal is to make two different poker hands, one with five cards and the other with two cards. If both hands of the player beat the dealer, then the player wins whatever they initially bet before the cards were dealt. If both hands lose, the house wins and the player loses their bet. If one wins and one loses, it’s a push and no mmoney changes hand. Pushes are very common at Pai Gow, which makes it popular with some players who are looking to get the most enjoyment out of their gambling dollars — and lots of free drinks from the cocktail waitresses! You can play pai gow online as well as at many casinos in Vegas and other larger gambling destinations. Sic Bo: Sic bo is a dice game that’s much more popular in Asian casinos in Macau and Singapore but can also be found in larger Vegas casinos as well as online. Similar to craps but with three dice rolled instead of two, you’ll be betting on different combinations that are rolled such as “Big” (the total of the three dice between 11-17), “Small” (a total between 4 and 10) and odd or even as well as other specific totals. War: If you played the card game War as a kid, yes, indeed, you can actually now gamble on it at casinos in Las Vegas and around the world. Just place your bet and you’ll battle it out with the delaer to see who is dealt the higher card; top the dealer and you win your bet. Chuck-a-luck: You’ll apparently have to travel all the way to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut to play this one, but chuck-a-luck is a dice game played with three dice tumbled in a cage. Bettors place wagers on how the dice will land, plunking down bets on numbered squares and winning according to how many times that number is rolled when the dice land. Money Wheel/Big Wheel: If you like to keep your gambling simple, money wheel might be the game for you, as you simply bet on what portion of a big spinning wheel you think the pointer at the top of the wheel will land on after the spin is done.

Betting on March Madness
12 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer March Madness begins this week, with college basketball’s annual tournament to determine a national champion taking its place as one of the most wagered-on sporting events each and every year. Aside from legal gambling in sportsbooks in Las Vegas, an estimated $2.5 billion in illegal bets will be made on March Madness in the US — not to mention as estimated $1 billion lost due to wages paid to distracted workers who are more focused on following NCAA games online instead of working. A survey from MSN said 86% of employees will spend time during working hours following the March Madness action, while more than half of workers said they would devote at least an hour to watching games during the first two days, with 6% of employees taking time off work. Office pools are the most common March Madness bet, ranging from casual work pools where co-workers each kick in a few bucks to highly competitive pools with entry fees of thousands of dollars. Sportsbooks in Las Vegas posted their odds Monday following Sunday’s announcement of the brackets, with Kentucky the odds-on favorite to take the title. The NFL Super Bowl is the most profitable event each year for sportsbooks but March Madness is a close second, with many gamblers making the trip to Las Vegas each year in March just to be able to bet on games. Betting at online sportsbooks will also be very popular, with more and more gamblers around the world going online to place their wagers on basketball, football, and other sports throughout the year. Online sportsbooks offer a wide range of bets for March Madness, including live in-game betting as well as dozens of different prop bets and other wagers that can only be found online. March Madness bracket pools and fantasy games are also very popular, with some free contests offering a million dollar payday in the unlikely event that a contestant is able to correctly pick the outcome of every single March Madness game.

New Jersey Online Gambling Bill Encounters Roadblock
19 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Some analysts had pegged New Jersey as the likely first US state to pass a bill allowing for legal intra-state online gambling for residents but the current bill being debated has failed to advance through the legislature and will have to wait at least six weeks for another try. The bill was sponsored by Raymond Lesniak and Jim Wehlan and is very similar to a nearly dentical bill that passed the state legislature in 2011 but was ultimately vetoed by Governor Chris Christie over concerns about implementation and conflicts with existing federal anti-gambling laws. One of those concerns — whether or not intra-state online poker and casino sites would run afoul of the US Wire Act — was answered in late 2011 when the US Department of Justice clarified its position on the issue by issuing an opinion that the Wire Act only applies to sportsbetting and not to other activities such as playing online poker or purchasing lottery tickets online. Christie himself had the following to say when asked about the Department of Justice’s clarification, lending support to the belief that the new online gambling bill would quickly be passed in New Jersey: “I think New Jersey should be in that business. I think we should be an epicenter for that business.” Some of Christie’s previous concerns revolved around how potential tax revenues gleaned from online gambling would be use to bolster the state’s existing gambling options as far as racetracks and casino — primarily in Atlantic City — without further damaging its poor recent results. Atlantic City has long been the US’ second largest gambling market but it is very likely to lose that crown to Pennsylvania in 2012, with newer casinos opening in neighboring states steadily siphoning gambling dollars (and tax revenues) away from New Jersey since its gambling revenues peaked in 2006.

US Government Indicts Calvin Ayre and Bodog
29 February 2012 | By: Seth Shafer The US government has indicted flamboyant billionaire Calvin Ayre, the founder of online gambling operator Bodog who for years has dared the US to try to stop him from taking bets from US customers. The US Department of Justice began a campaign in 2011 to crack down on Internet gambling sites serving US clients, unveiling indictments and domain seizures in April 2011 for two of the world’s largest online poker sites — Full Tilt and PokerStars — amid charges of flaunting US anti-gambling laws as well as wire fraud and money laundering. Similar charges were just unveiled against Ayre and other Bodog executives, with allegations that they oversaw the movement of more than $100 million in funds to and from customers in the US. Laws passed in late 2006 in the US made it illegal for banks to knowingly do business with online gambling sites, which serves as the basis for the US government’s case against Ayre and others as far as the lengths they went to to hide the fact they were moving money to and from US clients. Some industry analysts were shocked that it had taken the US government this long to go after Ayre; unlike the poker sites that were previously indicted (which is a slight grey area as no specific laws make playing online poker illegal in the US) the case against Ayre and Bodog was seen as more clear-cut since Bodog’s primary business was online sportsbetting, which is illegal under various US laws. Ayre made himself a very visible target as well, openly mocking the US government’s attempts to shut down his business and continuing to market and advertise Bodog as a US-friendly gambling site. Ayre claims to have retired from Bodog’s operations and the seizure of the Bodog.com domain will have little impact, as it hasn’t been used actively by the company for years. The company has transferred its brand to a new company named Bovada as far as its North American operations, while it continues under the Bodog brand in other markets around the world.

New TV Series Luck Gets Out of the Gates Fast
13 February 2012 | By: Seth Shafer The new original HBO series Luck starring Dustin Hoffman has gotten off to a good start, with HBO renewing it for a second season after the premier on January 29, 2012 drew largely positive reviews. Hoffman plays the character Chester “Ace” Bernstein, who is just emerging from a three-year stint in a federal prison. Ace has had a long successful history of being involved in the world of gambling (including ties to organized crime) and he quickly moves on his newest project after getting out of prison, which involves gaining control of a racetrack in order to introduce casino gambling there. As the story unwinds, however, it becomes clear that Ace has other motivations driving him other than business, including exacting revenge for a series of mistakes that led to his time in prison. Several other threads wind through the plot of the series, with horseracing serving as a central element that tie them all together. The star-studded cast includes other big names than Hoffman such as Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, and John Ortiz, as well as an appearance by famous jockey Gary Stevens. The creator of the series is David Milch, best known for helping to create NYPD Blue and Deadwood. Milch claims that he’d wanted to create the series for many years, with his own love of horseracing stretching back to his childhood: “The pilot is about a bunch of intersecting lives in the world of horse racing. It’s a subject which has engaged and some might say has compelled me for 50 years. I find it as complicated and engaging a special world as any I’ve ever encountered, not only in what happens in the clubhouse and the grandstand, but also on the backside of the track, where the training is done and where they house the horses.” The new series has largely gotten positive reviews, with Linda Stasi of the New York Post writing: “With an impossibly good cast, writing so spot-on it’s poetic, and slow-build stories, I, for one, was left wanting moreeven after watching the entire season.” More Casino News 29 February 2012 The US government has moved to indict flamboyant billionaire Calvin Ayre, the founder of online gambling operator Bodog who for years has dared the US Read more 24 February 2012 More details have emerged about the recent winner of the Beach Life online progressive slots jackpot, which reached a record $8,211,488 before it was Read more 18 February 2012 Macau picked up in January 2012 where it left off in 2011, with its casinos turning in a very strong performance and a record flow of Chinese gamblers Read more 13 February 2012 Atlantic City is still struggling to regain some of its former shine amid steadily declining gambling revenues, with Pennsylvania poised to pass it in Read more 07 February 2012 The District of Columbia was the first area in the US to change its laws to allow for online gambling for residents back in 2011 but the effort may be Read more 01 February 2012 The official schedule for the 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP) has been announced, which will feature 61 different tournaments with the $10,000 buy-i Read more
